James K. A. Smith, professor of Philosophy at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and editor of Comment magazine, was listed in Christianity Today’s 2015 Book Awards for his book How (Not) to Be Secular: Reading Charles Taylor.
The book, which received top honor in CT’s Christianity and Culture category, focuses on Charles Taylor’s book A Secular Age. Every year, CT chooses one book in each of eleven categories, books considered most likely to shape evangelical life and culture.
“I was quite surprised and encouraged by the award,” Smith said in an email. The motivation to write the book came from a senior seminar at Calvin where Smith and a group of philosophy majors read Taylor’s book together.
